Intake Procedure

Depending upon the availability of beds, our homes will accept emergency placements. However, our expectation is that the necessary documents and consents will be signed immediately upon the child/youth's arrival and follow-up information such as proof of citizenship, health card, immunization record and most recent school report is required for school registration as soon as possible after admission.

Length of Stay:

There is no fixed length of stay for a resident in our group homes. The length of any placement will be determined by the placing agency, the youth and T.L.K. jointly. However, we do feel that long-term change and development is often a slow and lengthy process.

Family Involvement:

T.L.K. believes that family is the cornerstone of life, that family can play a critical role in the overall care of a child. T.L.K. strongly believes in the maintenance and strengthening of family relationships and encourages families to visit (where approved by the referring Agency Social Worker(s). T.L.K. will include (whenever appropriate) the family of origin in the planning and care of their children, despite their location to that of the youth. The youth's status is important as a member of his/her family of origin.

Child/Youth profiles excluded from T.L.K:

Unfortunately T.L.K. does not cater to the needs of children/youth who are medically fragile, suffer from a sever personality disorder or are considered highly suicidal. Our program would also not be suitable for children/youth with a history of high risk behaviors such as fire setters and chronic runners.
